Zwartberg View Mountain Lodge
is set in our own private nature reserve, most of our guests revel
in the opportunity to actually get
out into the bush and experience
this unique environment for themselves…
Others want nothing more than to sit quietly on our decks and simply enjoy the passing parade of wildlife, yet others enjoy the juxtaposition of our unique wilderness
with the hustle and bustle of Oudtshoorn,
with it’s fine restaurants, numerous adventures that include such diverse options as the magnificent Cango Caves and
ostrich racing, returning to the lodge after
an exciting day out to find a magnificent
three course dinner ready to be served
on the firedeck.
On the reserve we have approximately
three hours of walking trails that take
one right into the red cliffs, where the Klipspringer live and into the massive overhangs where one imagines the San people once looked out over the landscape – on your walk you will be absolutely dumbfounded at the array of flowers and strange plants that bloom throughout the year, regardless of the season – to say nothing of the opportunity you might have
to get close to our larger game species, including zebra, springbok, kudu, duiker, steenbok and if you’re lucky, porcupine, jackal, aardvark and caracal.
For those who enjoy it, our waterhole provides an excellent opportunity to do
some birdwatching (but our main firedeck does as well) – here too you will be astonished to see birds you really never expected to find in this environment,
like fish eagle, pale chanting goshawk and
a rather surprising selection of water-associated species like kingfishers and weavers…
For those who truly appreciate them,
we have a wonderful array of sunbird
species – the malachites, arguably the
most beautiful of all, are often very happy
to sit quietly nearby waiting for photos to
be taken!
Activities off the reserve are
almost too numerous to mention, both Oudtshoorn and De Rust,
to say nothing of all Route 62
and indeed the Garden Route
bristles with things to do, things
to see –
from the awesome Swartberg Pass to delicate tastings
of some
of the world’s finest wines
and in particular ports…
